International shipping falls by one fifth in 2009 in Finland |
The volume of international sea transportation decreased by nearly 20 million tonnes in 2009, with the total quantity of transported goods falling to the level of the beginning of the century. A total of 83 million tonnes of goods were transported, 6 million tonnes of which consisted of transit shipments. Import transits decreased by about 60 per cent, while there was a slight rise in export transits.
The proportion of Finnish tonnage in international shipments increased slightly, with exactly one third (33.3 %) of shipments carried by Finnish vessels.
