A large containership which operates on the Baltic Sea can carry 900 standard-sized containers. To carry a similar amount of cargo by road transit takes 450 trucks; evidently transport by ship is more energy-efficient than transport by road. Shortsea shipping has in several cases proved to be a more cost-efficient solution than road transport. Shortsea shipping is also a reliable and punctual way to transport cargo. Finally, with shortsea shipping, the congested roads of Central Europe can be avoided.
Finland provides several alternatives for planning maritime transport. There are more than 50 commercial harbours in the country, providing connections to 400 regular sea routes to other European countries. Project transports are carried as tramp transport, taking the needs of the shippers into account.
