Advantages

Fast and efficient
The transport of goods is predicted to grow by as much as 50% in the European Union in the period 2000–2012. The roads in the Finnish main market areas in Europe are already badly congested. However, intermodal transport helps to decrease congestion by reducing handling times and storage durations. Sea transport is nearly always a part of the Finnish foreign trade transport chain. In Finland, the liner traffic connections to the main market areas in Europe are extensive, and from there the connections to the global market are excellent. In Central Europe inland water transport is often the alternative to road transport. Similarly, scheduled railway transport can be included in the foreign trade transportation chain.

Economical from door to door

The intermodal transportation chain is economical, especially where transport over long distances is concerned. The cargo arrives at its destination as planned and money is not tied up in storage costs during the efficient transportation chain.

Safe and reliable

With intermodal transport, the reduction in the number of cargo-handling phases means reduced risk of damage during transport, and new information technology solutions are continually improving transport tracking. Intermodal transportation is also safer than the traditional transport. Furthermore, the advantages offered by each individual transport mode can be benefitted from when combining transport modes.

Energy efficient
The negative environmental impacts of transport can be controlled by choosing a transportation chain based on shortsea shipping, railways and inland waterways. The energy efficiency of transport is improved when a considerable quantity of cargo is transported at one time. Intermodality increases the level of traffic security by shifting the trunk haulage away from the main roads. An intermodal transport chain is the best solution when the aim is to build a safe, energy efficient and environmentally friendly transport chain.

Choose intermodality!
An efficient intermodal transport chain can also be built for bulk cargo by increasing the interaction between modes, making the lead time more efficient and by using scheduled vessel or railway connections.
